8 DEGREES: Behind The Beat

What up y'all? It's Rhoro here today, and I'm here to tell you the story behind the beat.

The day before I made the beat. I was wrestling with a few of the massive decisions I made (studying a my particular degree (if you know, you know), applying to jobs then getting rejected or ghosted).

I was also struggling with my time management a lot, just the sheer weight of missing the opportunity to be there for people.

I genuinely didn't have access to a bus-pass either, so it was all weighing down on me mentally.

The guilt was getting to me that week, so on Sunday. I decided to turn on a livestream from my Church (FAC, shoutout to my FA people!) and the sermon was titled "2 Roads, 1 Way" by Ben Johnson.

Pastor Ben spoke about how the Christian path is narrow and difficult to traverse, but it is the right way, and that's all that matters.

I made the (uncomfortable) decision to apply this sermon into other aspects of my life. The choice of following my dreams as a music producer, the choice of studying #that degree.

And I realized these decisions weren't even the wrong decision! It would just take more effort and strategy to get the results that I would want.

So with a reinvigorated sense of hope and motivation, I went into making the beat for "8 Degrees".

Funfact: I actually made the first version of this beat and sent it to kane, but he didn't get back to me about the beat.

I reworked it w/ the AzuRho vision in mind, and "8 Degrees" is what came out of it.

I think that's one of my favorite beats I've ever made (so far), and I'm so grateful that it gets to be on a project that I'm 100% involved in.

A few months back, Chukwudum and I were discussing ideas for the album. And he came up with a cool idea: Naming each song after the imaginary things we wanted as kids. He came up with A LOT of things, and I really couldn't come up with anything from my childhood that I wanted. I thought about it for a few days, and I wondered why I couldn't come up with anything. It wasn't until later I realized it's because I hated watching most  of the cartoons that had imaginary things, PLUS most of the stuff I wanted as a kid I ended up getting. The one thing I REALLY loved as kid though was ties . My Mom always told me stories about how I'd run to the ties/suit section at most stores. Care 4 Urself.

-Chukwudum. I have very little self belief in myself. Which often comes as a fundamental contradiction to most people that have met me. So what does this mean for someone who's enthralled with art? It means that I, in turn, refuse to believe in what I create. Art is a reflection of what we think about our own perception of everything. So in making music, something so deeply personal, I find myself constantly second guessing. Now, if one found themselves working with one of the best young producers in the world and also being completely new at making music, the bridge between being 'okay' and being absolutely terrible feels insurmountable. I was on the phone with TOBi, a Canadian artist from Brampton who's helped me a lot in terms of laying the basis for my musical journey. I asked him what it was like, selling his own mixtapes out the back of his car. Now he got a couple albums and awards. So why not ask an extremely emotionally intelligent winner how to get my own feet...
